Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are oral prosthetic devices that replace some or all of the teeth in your smile. They’re made up of artificial teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base. That base attaches to your gums, either through suction, adhesive, or dental implants, and effectively replaces the missing teeth in your smile.

For patients missing some or all of their teeth, dentures are a useful tool for rediscovering their smiles. They can make it easier for you to speak correctly, improve your ability to chew and digest food, and offer renewed confidence in social situations as you share your new smile with those around you.

What types of dentures are available?

There are a few different types of dentures available that are designed to suit a wide range of unique needs and preferences, including:

Full dentures

Full dentures replace all of the teeth in your smile and attach to your gums with suction or adhesive.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace teeth in your smile when you still have a significant number of natural teeth. The base of partial dentures has an opening for your natural teeth, allowing your artificial teeth and your natural teeth to sit next to one another comfortably.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are similar to full dentures, but they connect to your smile through dental implants. Implant-supported dentures tend to feel more secure and comfortable in your mouth and have the added benefit of providing functional stimulation to your jawbone.

Are dentures comfortable?

Patients often wonder how dentures will fit comfortably in their mouths. It takes a little while for your mouth to get used to having new dentures, so you might feel slightly uncomfortable when you first start to wear them. As the muscles in your mouth learn to work with your new teeth, there’s an adjustment period, and you might experience an increased flow of saliva.

Once you acclimate, however, you should notice an improved feeling of comfort and capability. You’ll have an easier time speaking and eating than you did before you got your dentures, and you’ll likely feel more comfortable wearing your dentures than when you’re not wearing them.
